Beowulf

April was the beginning of Beowulf month at our house. Netflix is a great way of seeing films that are too expensive at the theater or are too obscure to just go and rent. Our viewing began with a documentary about Beowulf which was fine, but boring. The niftiest part about it was the beginning and end where the producer had someone reading the poem in Old English as the words scrolled across the screen in both Old and Modern English.

Next was the Beowulf made in 1999 which is a prime candidate for MST-3000. Oh, there isn't enough bad to say about this film. If I had realized that it starred Christopher Lambert, I would have had a better idea to NOT put it on our queue. We had to watch something afterwards to cleanse our palattes.

Last night we watched the latest Beowulf (2007) and were very impressed. Wow. The beginning was violently horrifying, all the more so because it was CG, but it was fantastic. Eventually we will own a copy. The main reason for this is that we are huge Neil Gaiman fans. Anything he does is worth checking out because he is Brilliant and we hope that he is always involved in executively producing films that are taken from his books/screen plays. It is so nice to see something so well done after viewing lame attempts by people who have the mentality of a 10th grader.
